City’s transformation continues at pace

The multi-billion-pound investment programme to transform Sunderland continues at pace.

Investment to the tune of more than £2billion has been pumped into the city over the past decade, creating new housing, workspaces and leisure venues.

Central to this is Riverside Sunderland, which spans both sides of the River Wear and includes the former Vaux Brewery site.

One of the UK’s most ambitious urban regeneration projects, the project will create 1,000 homes and 1 million square feet of offices and workspace, for 8,000 – 10,000 quality jobs.

The new Wear footbridge, set to open Summer 2025, spans both the north and south banks of the River Wear, and will help connect all the developments, improving accessibility to the city centre and Sheepfolds.

Sheepfolds Stables, a £4million food, drink, and entertainment development, which has been meticulously preserved and restored, opened in August.

Also under development are a world-class Eye Hospital, the Housing & Innovation Construction Skills Academy (HICSA), Riverside Park and Culture House.

Cllr Kevin Johnston, portfolio holder for business, housing and regeneration at Sunderland City Council, said: “It’s remarkable to reflect on just how much the face of the city has changed over the past few years, with over £500m in investment on site currently, which will transform Sunderland’s skyline forever.”

“And with yet more cranes set to move onto key developments across the city, it’s no surprise that so many businesses are looking to do business here.”

“The city is on a real upwards trajectory and we’re incredibly proud as a council to be leading this generational transformation of the city.”
